On the contrary, cheap nike sb dunk shoes, he said there’s a possibility the company will increase its market share in the U.S. after an estimated 1,500 jewelry stores closed their doors this year. Another positive for U.S. sales would be that Wall Street bonuses and tourism are seen to remain key drivers in the fourth quarter.

Tunick explained the company’s fourth-quarter estimates are likely a result of a hit last holiday season for keeping merchandise at full price, while other luxury players offered promotions amid macroeconomic weakness.

Other jeweler stocks were also down. Declining more than any competitor, Zale Corp. (ZLC) shares fell 3.7% to $7.02. It’s move erased Thursday’s 2.5% gain. The volatile stock has continued to fluctuate as investors await the company’s fourth-quarter results that have been delayed twice as it works to finalize the review of its accounting.Meanwhile, shares of Blue Nile Inc. (NILE) shares were flat at $60.07, while Signet Jewelers Ltd. (SIG) shares were down less than 1% at $25.14.

Tunick, who rates the stock neutral, said based on the two-year comparable run rate, Tiffany management expects U.S. comps to be flattish in the fourth quarter and has embedded that in full-year guidance.

Despite those benefits, chi flat iron, the firm said it is less optimistic and is modeling that U.S. sales in the fourth quarter will be down 5% to 7%.Longer term, Tunick expects Tiffany to further expand its global presence, driven by the strength of its brand as management plans to double its European store base. He also believes the company has “significant opportunity” in the Asia Pacific region, where the company believes it could grow its eight stores in mainland China to 25 to 30 locations.

Jewelry sales have tumbled in the past year as consumers have veered away from stores during the recession. To cope with depressed sales, some bigger jewelry companies have cut inventory and their work forces as some mom-and-pop stores have shut their doors completely.Shares of Tiffany & Co. (TIF) slipped Friday amid declines in the jewelry sector, after J.P. Morgan said management expects fiscal fourth-quarter U.S. comparable same-store sales to be flattish.

In recent trading, shares of the luxury jeweler dropped 2.4% to $35.90. The stock earlier hit an intraday low of $35.64. The decline comes after J.P Morgan analyst Brian Tunick wrote a note to clients, highlighting his Thursday meeting with the company’s management.

Customers who subscribe to e-mail messages from Neiman Marcus, for instance, are regularly invited to “midday dash” sales. The two-hour, online-only sales promise 50 percent off luxury goods that can be bought only by clicking on a link in the e-mail message. Customers learn about the sale mere hours before it begins. This week’s “dash” featured a $697 Burberry handbag, waterproof boot, marked down from $1,395. A Carmen Marc Valvo chiffon gown was $575, down from $1,150. And Cole Haan flats were $82, down from $165

At Tiffany & Company, executives contend that sale signs would clash with the jeweler’s reputation for timeless quality, symbolized by its signature blue boxes. “We certainly don’t engage in price promotion,” Mark L. Aaron, the company’s vice president for investor relations, said in an interview.

The conventional wisdom is that the more consumers who know about a sale, the better for business. But that rule does not necessarily hold in luxury retailing.”When you’re selling anything in luxury,” said David A. Schick, a managing director and retailing analyst with Stifel Nicolaus, “you’re selling exclusivity.”Rather than post big sale signs, which can mar a store’s reputation, high-end chains are trying to unload $3,000 handbags and $800 shoes by periodically telling customers that certain items are on sale, even if the price tags say otherwise. The stores also engage in the electronic equivalent of whispering in a customer’s ear: sending select customers e-mail alerts about private online sales.

Neiman Marcus declined to discuss the “midday dash” extensively for competitive reasons and because it is still testing the promotion. But the retailer said that so far it is pleased with the results.

A time-worn strategy typically reserved for a store’s best customers, it has become more democratized as the recession drags on and retailers struggle to turn browsers into buyers.

Tiffany conducted customer research that shows its shoppers would be loath to see the chain, founded in 1837, offering 20-percent-off charm bracelets and pearl earrings.”We say, 鈥楬ere’s the product and here’s the price, and the price is justified,’ ” Mr. Aaron said.Even so, Tiffany has lowered prices on diamond engagement rings about 10 percent, hoping to cultivate a lifelong relationship between the prospective groom and the Tiffany brand.Of course, many luxury retailers have long offered discreet discounts to their top customers. Sales associates at luxe department stores were typically empowered to give discounts of about 10 percent to customers spending upward of a certain amount of money, buy ghd, usually $20,000 or $25,000.In this economy, however, the discounts are “more in-your-face,” said Stacey Widlitz, a retailing analyst with Pali Research.
